Both will enter into dialogue about the characteristics of their respective practices, drawing out in more detail the way they work, how the magic of the fairy tale is achieved, and what role the fairy tale holds in contemporary society. Inspired by the topics in our program Once Upon a Time… this edition of Roodkapje Radio dives deeper into the influences and impact of pregnancy and motherhood on the careers, work and life of professional artists. Lead by moderator (and mother) Dagmar Veenstra, artists and mothers Charlien Adriaenssens, Priscila Fernandes, and Weronika Zielinska will discuss their experiences, choices, and perspectives on pregnancy, combining motherhood with a career in art, and the influence of raising a family on making and showing art. In the second half of the podcast, Sanne Nout from Mom Inc., platform for mothers on combining motherhood with working, will join the conversation to further discuss how the (art)world can offer a better support structure for artists who combine, or are looking to combine, motherhood with a professional practice in the future.

With Dagmar Veenstra (moderator), Charlien Adriaenssens, Priscila Fernandes, Weronika Zielinska, and Sanne Nout.

This is the second collaborative program of Roodkapje’s Hamburger Communities of Art and Live. ‘Once Upon a Time…’ takes the wonderful world of HCA-artist Danielle Hoogendoorn as a point of departure. As Hoogendoorn creates paintings and sculptures in which animals take the lead, magical, absurd and real scenario’s intertwine. They are fairy tales in themselves, both in narrative construction and aesthetics, balancing on the boundaries of art, kitsch, and dark humour. Focussed on the fairy tale, both in its historical and contemporary appearance, Once Upon a Time… provides a range of events going deeper into human-animal relationships, (non-linear) storytelling, and laying bare structures of transformation, imagination and wonder.

The Hamburger Community programs of Roodkapje provide two yearlong development trajectories for five young, talented artists (Art), and five aspiring event programmers (Live). Throughout the year both the Hamburger Community of Art and Live collectively work towards five interdisciplinary programmes built around the work and research of the individual Hamburger Community artists.

During their stay at Roodkapje the artists and residents will receive guidance and support from professionals from their respective fields, and through an in-depth trajectory that is aimed at further developing their professional skills and positions.

SPECIAL THANKS TO Roodkapje’s Hamburger Community of Art was made possible with the kind support of Stichting Bevordering van Volkskracht, Stichting Ondernemersbelangen Rotterdam, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, Stichting Elise Mathilde Fonds, Fleur Groenendijk Foundation, and the Gemeente Rotterdam.
